when was the last time your living room
0:02
felt like a place of rest instead of a
0:04
drop zone for shoes toys laundry and
0:07
overwhelm we say that the living room is
0:10
the heart of the home but if we're
0:11
honest the living room often becomes the
0:13
place where everything ends up but
0:15
nothing really gets put away sometime
0:17
it's where the clutter piles the screens
0:20
distract where connection can be lost
0:22
under piles of I'll get to it later but
0:24
what if this space could be reclaimed
0:27
not just cleaned what if your living
0:28
room could reflect the spiritual rest
0:30
that Jesus promises in Matthew 11 28
0:36
come to me all who are weary and
0:37
burdened and I will give you rest today
0:40
we're not just fluffing pillows and
0:42
cleaning surfaces but creating a space
0:43
for connection for restoration and for
0:46
presence so let's take a deep breath and
0:49
let's just take it one basket at a time
0:51
one bookshelf and one burden one pile at
0:54
a time
0:56
today I am going to be decluttering my
0:58
living room with you guys i am going to
1:00
be starting inside of my coat closet
1:03
because this closet can often fill up
1:06
with a ton of clutter as you can see we
1:09
have way more coats than we need and of
1:13
course there are plenty of cold months
1:15
in the winter here where I live up north
1:17
but I just don't think that it's
1:19
necessary for us to have so many coats
1:21
there are literally some coats that I
1:23
wear specifically for certain occasions
1:25
like if I just so happen to be going to
1:28
a wedding there's one coat that I just
1:30
like to do winter yard work like raking
1:33
the leaves and then there is my comfy
1:36
coat my church coat basically we have a
1:38
lot of coats and so does my husband and
1:40
my son as well so I'm just trying to go
1:43
through and see what I can minimalize in
1:45
here it's literally like bursting out of
1:47
the closet and just overflowing and this
1:50
is just one of the things that we see
1:52
when we wake up in the morning and as
1:54
soon as we come down the stairs and I
1:56
don't know about you but the first thing
1:57
that I see when I come downstairs in my
2:00
home to open up the blinds is definitely
2:02
not a coat closet overflowing with
2:04
cluttering so it was really imperative
2:07
that I focus on this space first as I am
2:11
creating more room for peace inside of
2:13
my home i do think that things that we
2:16
have in our home has a lot to do with
2:18
the peace that we also have inside of
2:20
our heart and I think it's so truly
2:22
important that we steward things that we
2:24
have and steward our blessings there are
2:27
people that may be able to use these
2:30
coats a lot more than we have a need for
2:33
them obviously we you know need coats
2:36
but we just don't need this many and
2:38
there are definitely people in the world
2:40
who just don't even have a coat so when
2:43
decluttering and minimalizing don't just
2:45
look at it as you just throwing away all
2:48
of your favorite prized possessions
2:49
because honestly they're just for us or
2:52
for me personally they're just material
2:54
things but for someone else it might
2:56
mean so much more so it can definitely
2:59
truly be a blessing when you minimalize
3:03
and declutter some of the things in your
3:05
home if you have a purpose of like you
3:08
know repurposing it or donating it for
3:11
someone who really does truly need it a
3:13
lot more than you there's so much beauty
3:16
giving and sharing when we let go of
3:19
something that is just trash to us then
3:23
that's you know that's one thing that's
3:24
something that's easily done but imagine
3:26
if we were to let go of something that
3:27
we actually really do like and we really
3:30
do love but we are giving it away to
3:33
somebody else who needs it more and that
3:35
way it's a bit more sacrificial and
3:38
we're also relying on the Lord to
3:40
provide us with the things that we need
3:43
in full abundance so I like to keep that
3:46
mindset when letting go of things never
3:48
to be so tied to my things that I feel
3:52
like I just can't let it go that I feel
3:54
like I can't share it and give it to
3:56
others i just try to see myself living a
3:59
lot more simple and a lot more minimal
4:01
so that I'm relying on the Lord to
4:03
provide us with the things that we need
4:06
and so here inside of my coat closet
4:08
that's what I'm doing with some of these
4:10
really nice thick warm coats i love
4:12
these coats and they serve a really
4:14
great purpose for me but again it's just
4:16
that we have more than what we need and
4:19
then there's someone else who is going
4:21
to need them more than us i do this with
4:24
clothing i do this with shoes even with
4:26
furniture we're probably like the
4:28
dumpster divers's favorite house in the
4:30
neighborhood because we're constantly
4:32
like letting go of things since we've
4:34
been in this minimalism journey and this
4:36
simple living journey and decluttering
4:38
we're just constantly putting more and
4:40
more things and you would think that we
4:42
would have been done by now just by
4:44
seeing how much we've been putting
4:46
outside and constantly we get to see
4:48
like other people come and pick it up
4:50
and it never actually ends up in the
4:52
trash but in someone else's home and it
4:54
is really like just a good feeling to
4:57
see that someone else needed your item
4:59
more than you did here in this living
5:02
room I'm just trying to create more
5:05
space so that I could just look at this
5:06
place with fresh eyes i'm not trying to
5:08
make it perfect i'm not trying to
5:10
impress anyone i'm not trying to be
5:12
trendy but I'm just trying to make it
5:14
more peaceful and more hospitable so
5:16
that even when other people come over to
5:18
my home it's a lot more comfortable more
5:21
room for the children to sit in the
5:23
middle of the floor and play games and
5:25
things like that the living room is
5:26
supposed to be where we connect but
5:29
sometimes it just feels more like a
5:31
space where we're constantly managing
5:33
than enjoying and just not even a lot of
5:35
space for us to be able to connect there
5:37
have been times where we wanted to have
5:39
guests or company over and someone
5:41
wanted to come over but I thought about
5:43
how my living room looked and I was like
5:45
"Oh my goodness we cannot have guests
5:47
over right now because my home is a
5:49
mess." Where you know are we going to
5:52
host and entertain and so if you have
5:55
just a few things that you even have to
5:57
manage and keep tidy it's a lot more
5:59
easy for you to be that hospitalitable
6:01
person that you know the Bible
6:03
encourages us to be in Luke chapter 10
6:07
it tells the story of Mary and Martha
6:08
martha was busy like most of us moms and
6:11
homemakers are she was making everything
6:15
ready all the time she wanted the home
6:17
to feel welcoming but then Jesus said
6:19
"Mary has chosen what is better." But
6:22
what did Mary choose it definitely was
6:24
not perfection that's not to say that
6:26
what Martha wasn't doing wasn't
6:28
important either but what Mary chose was
6:31
to be present what if we viewed our
6:34
living rooms that same way not as a
6:36
place to keep looking like a magazine
6:39
but a place where we just sit at Jesus's
6:41
feet through rest relationships and
6:44
renewal how beautiful would that really
6:47
be proverbs 15:16 tells us "Better is a
6:52
little with the fear of the Lord than
6:54
great treasure with trouble." You do not
6:57
need more throw pillows instead you need
6:59
more peace god can meet you right here
7:02
in between the toys in between the
7:04
clutter here I am now decluttering some
7:08
of the hats that we have this is just
7:10
another one of those things where why do
7:12
we need so many hats i am a stay at home
7:14
mom i do not leave the house that often
7:17
when I do go outside it might be to take
7:20
a walk it may be to rake some leaves put
7:23
some salt down but I'm not outside often
7:26
enough to need this many hats and gloves
7:29
they're great to have but it's just not
7:32
necessary and so I'm trying to go
7:34
through and declutter this a little bit
7:36
more as well i'm looking for the ones
7:38
that are still in good shape the ones
7:40
that I know I have gone to this stack
7:43
here is just a pile of them that I don't
7:47
often wear and so I'm getting rid of
7:48
those and putting those in the box so
7:50
that we can donate those to someone else
7:52
who will need it and now I'm looking for
7:54
the matching sets like hats and gloves
7:58
and scarfves that match and go with one
8:00
another and we're going to put those
8:01
away i'm going to try and fit it all
8:03
inside of this basket so that it looks
8:06
somewhat neat at the top of my closet
8:09
and not just like a big cluttered mess
8:12
so that is kind of what I'm doing here
8:14
just going through our hats our scarves
8:16
our gloves it's actually cold more
8:18
months of the year than it is warm here
8:20
so we do put the stuff to get used so
8:23
normally I would just put this stuff
8:24
away in the garage but I'm almost 100%
8:27
sure
8:29
it's going to feel like I just put it
8:31
away when I go to pull it back out so to
8:33
save myself the hassle I'm just It's
8:36
just so much easier like I said to just
8:38
be able to declutter i would love to
8:40
just only have so much stuff that
8:44
technically all of my seasonal items can
8:48
fit inside of one closet like winter
8:50
summer fall all of the things if they
8:52
could all fit inside one closet without
8:54
me having to dig them out of the garage
8:56
then then I would say I have like really
8:59
done a great job at minimizing my
9:00
wardrobe and everything but for now we
9:02
are just starting with the coat closet
9:05
with the hats with the scarves and
9:06
things like that
9:12
[Music]
9:14
if you too are decluttering with me
9:17
maybe you don't stay in a state where
9:20
it's often you know cold or where the
9:24
seasons change up as much as mine maybe
9:26
you've already done this part whatever
9:28
it is that you're decluttering I still
9:30
want to you know encourage you and
9:31
invite you to walk through the space
9:33
with me again we're just taking it one
9:35
zone at a time your journey is not going
9:38
to look like mine's but you know there
9:40
are plenty of opportunity surfaces like
9:44
coffee tables in tables entertainment
9:46
centers these are normally those clutter
9:49
magnets where the books pile up and the
9:52
remote controls the cords i'm going to
9:54
show you guys one very soon and so if
9:57
you're doing this with me go ahead and
9:59
grab a basket and just toss in anything
10:01
that does not belong you know in that
10:04
room and then we'll use that basket
10:06
later on to put things away if you have
10:09
toys like for your little ones this is
10:11
also big pick a small bin that you just
10:14
keep inside of your living room just one
10:17
and then the rest of the toys go back
10:19
into the bedroom books and decor ask
10:22
yourself do those bring you peace do
10:24
they bring you pressure if it's dusty
10:27
broken or never read it's okay to let it
10:30
go and then the same thing with blankets
10:32
and pillows only keep what's cozy and
10:34
just put the rest of them away remember
10:37
it's not about stripping the room bare
10:39
but just about making space where our
10:41
soul and our family can breathe here I'm
10:44
just breaking down the swing that you
10:46
guys see this was baby girl's swing and
10:48
she hasn't been able to fit in this
10:50
swing or let me not say that she can fit
10:52
in it but I'm pretty sure she's over the
10:53
weight limit and she just doesn't like
10:55
it anyway so it was one that we had kept
10:58
like in our gym we would take it outside
11:00
and she would sit in it when we were
11:01
gardening but she doesn't use it anymore
11:04
so I'm going to put it away
11:17
this here is my entertainment table that
11:21
I was talking about earlier when I said
11:22
this is a clutter magnet to the fullest
11:26
and we actually have a lift top coffee
11:29
table here that's what this is it's a
11:31
lift top coffee table that used to be in
11:33
the middle of the floor but when baby
11:35
girl began being mobile and moving
11:37
around crawling and trying to walk we
11:39
got it out of the middle of the floor
11:40
and we like it better here underneath
11:42
the TV out of the way but still game
11:44
controllers and everything just gets
11:47
cluttered here i try not to bother too
11:49
much which I'll talk about later in the
11:51
video but I at least want things to
11:53
somewhat look tidy so this here is kind
11:55
of like the best I was able to do for
11:58
now we will revisit it this is also the
12:01
area where we are homeschooling so I
12:03
decided to take some things off the wall
12:04
we had a small dry erase board a
12:07
bulletin board we got like a lap in the
12:09
middle of the floor this area like you
12:11
can see it's just not the room that
12:15
gives me like that homeschool piece that
12:17
I'm looking for so this is another area
12:20
that I'm trying to declutter as well all
12:23
right you guys so this room is
12:25
definitely like by far not perfect but
12:28
it's definitely a lot more manageable
12:30
now there are a few areas that I'm going
12:31
to be keeping my eye on over the next
12:33
few weeks i'm going to show you guys
12:34
what it's looking like and then I'll
12:36
show you guys the family room so that
12:38
you guys can kind of see the difference
12:41
in progress I've made i went through
12:42
some mail and the desk and things like
12:44
that so let's just take a look around
12:47
really quickly so
12:49
of course um now over here is probably
12:53
the main main source of clutter and this
12:58
is just my husband and my son's little
13:01
gaming area it is not very organized and
13:04
they are at this area every single day
13:07
so it's not like an area that they don't
13:09
use and so I want it to be comfortable
13:11
but I don't want to just take it away to
13:13
where they can't even enjoy it so yeah
13:16
tons of things here i'm going to see if
13:17
there's anything we can do to minimize
13:19
this area a little bit more we have
13:21
storage underneath this lift top table
13:24
so maybe some things can go under there
13:26
we'll see but that's literally the main
13:28
thing right now i was contemplating if I
13:31
should get rid of that blanket sometimes
13:33
blankets and throw pillows can
13:34
definitely add to visual clutter but the
13:37
goal of minimalizing and decluttering is
13:39
to make your home more comfortable that
13:41
is one of those things I like to snuggle
13:43
up on the sofa with if I'm nursing baby
13:46
girl or if the air conditioning is going
13:48
so I'm going to keep it there it's a
13:51
basic simple color and it's comfy we're
13:54
going to leave that there so that's this
13:55
area here this won't be here forever but
13:58
for now this is like a play pant and I
14:01
even used the top to change my
14:02
daughter's diaper so convenience and
14:05
then here is the homeschool area which
14:06
we minimize to a desk an alphabet poster
14:09
an alphabet rug and a bookshelf we do
14:12
have a basket over here that I like to
14:14
keep in case anything comes into this
14:16
room that needs to be put back in its
14:18
place it can go in this basket and then
14:20
we can get that basket at the end of the
14:22
week and put things back where they
14:23
belong so it also helps with keeping the
14:25
home tidy and where they're not
14:26
scattered all over the home and then you
14:29
can put them back where they go i've
14:30
been recommending that for some years
14:31
now this side of the room i don't quite
14:34
like that space for the vacuum but it's
14:37
not a huge deal for me right now we have
14:40
the keyboard the baby swing that we're
14:43
going to get a box and that's not going
14:44
to be here anymore so feel better about
14:47
that soon because she no longer uses it
14:49
we're not going to completely get rid of
14:50
it because I know we're going to have
14:52
more children in the future God willing
14:55
so we'll find a box that we can put that
14:58
in and where we can store it away neatly
15:00
in the garage i don't want to do it
15:02
right now cuz I don't know exactly where
15:04
I want to put it in the garage that
15:05
swing there so once I figure that out
15:08
we'll put that we'll break it down and
15:10
put it away but we did break down the
15:11
other swing and put that one away and
15:13
then this is my little desk area so over
15:15
here we've got some cord management
15:17
under there for baby proofing my printer
15:20
another camera and then I also have my
15:23
label printer for my business this
15:25
doesn't always stay up here i actually
15:27
store that in the garage i'm able to
15:28
print a lot of labels quickly that's
15:31
here for now so up here on my desk I
15:33
have another basket this basket is
15:35
things that need to be put away as well
15:37
this is just one of those areas that I
15:40
often can gather a lot of things up here
15:42
that I need to later put in its home so
15:44
keeping a basket here is going to be
15:46
beneficial as well and then I can put
15:47
all of the stuff back at the end of the
15:49
week i've got a couple of books that I
15:50
like to read in the morning so I keep
15:52
some in my room and some down here to
15:54
read and that's fine baby monitor the
15:57
only other thing is this wall here
16:00
because we took down the bulletin board
16:02
i'm probably going to replace even that
16:04
calendar with one large board that has
16:06
like multi-use so on Amazon I saw a
16:09
learning board that has like a dry erase
16:12
marker section a chalk section a
16:14
bulletin section and I think maybe a
16:16
calendar section if there isn't a
16:18
calendar section we can always pin a
16:20
calendar to the bulletin section but
16:21
basically it's a montuse board so
16:23
instead of me having like a bulletin
16:26
board and then having a dry erase board
16:29
somewhere else chalkboard in a different
16:30
area a calendar like four different
16:33
boards all over the wall we can get that
16:36
one multi-use board and then I'll put it
16:38
up over there that's what I'm going to
16:40
do in the meantime I still have our
16:42
calendar because it is kind of multi-use
16:44
it's just smaller so I've got some of
16:46
his spelling words here and then some of
16:49
the things from church camp are pinned
16:51
down here and then our calendar so
16:53
here's the family room and there's
16:55
definitely some places of clutter this
16:58
area is cluttered i have some things I
17:00
got to put into the garden over here i'm
17:02
not a fan of that rug there um these are
17:05
my son's toys that he's currently
17:07
playing with right now so he can put
17:09
that stuff away soon up there next to
17:11
the television a little bit of clutter
17:13
over there those toys underneath the
17:15
table those are there purposely so
17:18
that's pretty much it in here so pretty
17:21
much what I have been doing is trying to
17:24
declutter my home for a couple of years
17:26
now but not in a minimalistic type of
17:30
way just recently I began to lean
17:34
towards more minimalism and I will
17:35
explain why about that in a separate
17:37
video um in the next coming weeks i
17:41
talked a lot about it thus far but I
17:43
will do one video specifically tailored
17:46
towards that and what I've been doing is
17:49
trying to basically make it um optimized
17:52
for us the best way possible comfortable
17:55
easy to clean not overwhelming and
17:58
chaotic peaceful clean looking open
18:01
space if possible things like that and
18:03
it takes some times to figure that out
18:05
so the way that I would recommend anyone
18:07
do it is that you declutter some um room
18:11
by room drawer by drawer um closet by
18:15
closet space by space and do what you
18:18
can and then you live in it for a little
18:21
while live in it for a few weeks fill it
18:23
out see what is still like those pain
18:27
points for you and then you do it all
18:29
over again so it's not going to be done
18:31
in one weekend um one day you can get a
18:35
lot done in a weekend in a day but
18:38
that's just a starting point and then as
18:40
you continue in life and you buy more
18:42
things you have more children you're
18:44
going to continue to have to revisit
18:46
this that's pretty much what I have been
18:48
doing this living room has definitely
18:50
come a long way you guys the television
18:52
wasn't always up on the wall we had like
18:54
this gigantic TV stand a couple more
18:57
table services in here and it's been
19:00
coming along so still a few more things
19:02
that we need to work out here in this
19:03
room i can just look around and see but
19:06
it's definitely coming together so we're
19:08
going to live in it for a few weeks and
19:10
we're going to revisit it again the
19:11
family room we are like this close to
19:13
being done with both actually but
19:15
especially that family room like there
19:16
are maybe two things in there that's a
19:19
pain point for me at the moment and it's
19:22
not a huge issue so yeah there's that so
19:26
far
19:28
things are coming together i really want
19:29
to focus on my hallway soon because our
19:31
hallway is where we kind of put a lot of
19:33
things like on a bench so if I can like
19:35
figure out how to make us stop doing
19:37
that maybe put a basket there too that's
19:40
what I'm thinking if I put a basket on
19:41
the bench we can start putting things in
19:43
that basket if ever there is like an
19:46
area in your home where typically you
19:50
know a lot of clutter builds up those
19:52
are those areas where I recommend you
19:54
put a basket if we could just handle it
19:56
right away we would right and I
19:58
recommend that but sometimes there are
20:01
busy days and those busy days are the
20:04
ones that get you you come in and you
20:07
toss things down because you're in a
20:09
hurry and everything and that's also why
20:11
we try to live more intentional and
20:13
slower when slow down and living so that
20:16
you know we don't always feel rushed in
20:18
that way but last week was definitely a
20:20
busy week for us my son had church camp
20:24
swim practice we had um a dinner to
20:27
attend lots of different things and so
20:30
I'm looking at this bench in my hallway
20:32
and it's cluttered i have a diaper bag i
20:35
have a sharp shopping cart covered a few
20:38
clothes a blanket and um my son's swim
20:42
bag those are the things
20:44
that I'm referring to so a basket on
20:49
that in that area somewhere would be
20:50
great where I can put those things that
20:52
we need to put upstairs at the end of
20:54
the week if need be so that's another
20:57
really great tip when it comes to
20:58
decluttering especially like visual
21:01
clutter but as far as this here living
21:05
room we're done we're going to leave in
21:06
this we're going to live in this space
21:07
for a little while look at my husband
21:09
and my son's gaming area and we're we'll
21:11
come back to this in a few more weeks so
21:14
we're just going through this journey
21:15
together um let me know if you're
21:17
working on any decluttering projects as
21:19
well if so comment below let me know and
