today I want to talk about something
0:01
that is a little unheard of or just less
0:04
spoken of it's very common and many
0:07
people really don't speak on it or if
0:09
they do they don't talk about it like
0:11
it's just something serious so I'm gonna
0:14
be talking a little bit more in bringing
0:16
a bit more awareness to seasonal
0:19
depression if you stay in a climate or a
0:22
state or a part of the country or the
0:24
world that goes through long winter
0:27
seasons that can be pretty dark pretty
0:29
cold rainy gloomy then you know exactly
0:32
what I'm talking about when I mentioned
0:33
seasonal depression so today I just want
0:36
to just talk a little bit more about it
0:38
and share my own experience and if you
0:40
two have experienced something like this
0:42
or you do so pretty often then I want
0:45
you to comment below and let me know
0:47
some of the things that you do to
0:49
overcome this seasonal depression and
0:51
I'm going to be sharing with you all
0:52
some of my own tips and some things that
0:55
I typically do during the winter season
0:57
months so that I don't get so deep down
1:01
into seasonal depression that it affects
1:04
my standard of living and affects those
1:06
around me and how I care for my children
1:08
hey Google what is the definition of
1:11
seasonal depression according to
1:13
Wikipedia seasonal affective disorder is
1:15
a mood disorder subset in which people
1:17
who have normal mental health throughout
1:19
most of the Year exhibit depressive
1:20
symptoms at the same time each year
1:22
commonly but not always in the winter
1:24
time with reduced sunlight it seems as
1:26
if recent they've been calling its
1:28
Seasonal effective disorder to take off
1:32
basically the fact that it's a
1:35
depression so a mayoclinic.org it says
1:38
seasonal affective disorder or seasonal
1:41
depression is a type of depression
1:43
that's related to changes in Seasons
1:45
which begins and ends at about the same
1:47
times every year so basically during the
1:50
cold fall or winter month if you are
1:53
like most people with sad your symptoms
1:55
start in the fall and continue into the
1:57
winter months well I said that which
2:00
basically just sucks your energy making
2:02
you feel Moody these symptoms often
2:04
resolve during the spring and summer
2:06
months so the symptoms of seasonal
2:09
depression or a seasonal affect if
2:12
disorder is feeling listless sad or down
2:15
most of the day nearly every day losing
2:18
interest in activities you once enjoyed
2:21
having low energy feeling sluggish
2:23
having problems with sleeping too much
2:25
experiencing carbohydrate Cravings
2:27
overeating and gaining weight having
2:30
difficulty concentrating feeling
2:32
hopeless worthless or guilty and having
2:35
thoughts of not wanting to live
2:38
oversleeping appetite changes especially
2:40
or craving for high Foods that's high in
2:43
carbs weight gain tiredness low energy
2:46
per I mean the list just goes on and on
2:49
and on and this is a very real thing
2:51
that most people
2:55
but even more commonly most moms
2:57
particularly stay-at-home moms
3:00
experience as a stay-at-home mom we
3:03
already spend most of our time inside of
3:06
the home aside from that we have less
3:08
contact with the outside world we have
3:11
less time to spend with friends and
3:13
families on outings and Gatherings and
3:16
things like that we don't wake up every
3:17
morning and leave the house and go to a
3:19
nine to five job as a stay-at-home mom
3:21
again we spend most of our time in the
3:23
house so because of that we have less
3:27
opportunities to get like fresh air
3:30
sunshine and sunlight but we can
3:34
normally get it just by opening up our
3:36
Windows opening up the curtains going
3:38
for a walk outside sitting on the patio
3:40
things like that when it's cold outside
3:44
not only are we discouraged from going
3:47
out because of how cold it is we don't
3:48
want to take our little ones out there
3:50
most of the time I don't want to go out
3:51
there and freeze either
3:53
um there's less enjoyable activities
3:55
that you can do throughout the cold
3:57
winter months and even if you do it's
4:00
difficult to actually find the Sun so
4:03
it'll be light outside during the day
4:05
but light and sunny are two different
4:08
things and so you're still missing out
4:10
on the sunlight that you kind of like
4:15
need as a stay-at-home mom to feel
4:17
energized and get that vitamin D and
4:20
things like that so that's where
4:22
seasonal depression comes in for me many
4:25
of the symptoms that were listed on Mayo
4:27
clinic.org does affect me most
4:29
specifically for me it is the sleeping
4:33
in late or wanting to sleep more having
4:36
low energy loss of interest and things
4:38
that I used to enjoy and kind of just
4:41
being moody when I wake up and I look
4:44
outside and it's gloomy the house is
4:46
darker than it normally is in the
4:48
summertime because there's no sunlight
4:50
coming in so my mood kind of just
4:52
resembles what's happening around around
4:55
me so what do I do in those seasons and
4:58
when I start to feel seasonal depression
5:00
so there's my little one he is almost
5:03
four years old now so it's definitely
5:05
gotten better for me as a stay-at-home
5:07
mom and dealing with seasonal depression
5:09
but um mostly because of this guy so
5:11
like he's my reason why he's my reason
5:14
to get up and do what needs to be done
5:16
and to just not allow that mood to
5:19
affect me because if it affect me
5:22
there's a good chance that it's gonna
5:24
affect him too so there's my first thing
5:27
is find something that's bigger than the
5:31
circumstance find something that's
5:33
bigger than a seasonal depression I get
5:35
that you
5:36
can be affected by it I do and it's so
5:39
so so so so so so hard but I asked
5:42
myself which one can affect me more that
5:45
moodiness those dark days the gloominess
5:48
outside or my child's mood his
5:51
temperament how he feels I literally
5:53
just get kind of scared like
5:56
I dread it like it terrifies me like
6:00
towards the end of the summer when I
6:01
know that the sun is starting to leave
6:03
us and fall and winter is approaching
6:05
because I've had Seasons where it was
6:09
pretty bad days full of like tears and
6:12
just thinking something was wrong with
6:14
me so we searched for many many reasons
6:16
when it's pretty much just the fact that
6:19
we need a little bit of sunlight we need
6:21
a little bit of fresh air we we need
6:23
something to pick us up so what do we
6:26
replace
6:28
that with other reasons and other things
6:30
that we can use to lift us up and pick
6:32
us up other things that puts us in a
6:34
good mood and we have to go out and
6:36
search for them and find them because
6:37
it's not going to come naturally during
6:39
those cold winter months you're not just
6:40
going to wake up and it's shining down
6:44
at you so we kind of have to either put
6:46
it in front of ourselves or go and look
6:48
for it standing at my window you can see
6:51
what it looks like it looks pretty
6:53
gloomy out there right trees are dead my
6:55
flower bed is empty it's pretty darn
6:59
gloomy out there so what can we do the
7:03
biggest thing for me is a change in my
7:05
mindset because I know that seasonal
7:08
depression is something that affects me
7:10
I tell myself it's gonna affect me I
7:12
know it's going to affect me and so I
7:13
wake up and I'm already like
7:16
affected by it like I said I go into it
7:19
afraid so but opposite thing of what we
7:21
can do is tell ourselves
7:23
this season it's not going to affect me
7:26
I'm not going to allow it to hinder me
7:28
I'm not gonna allow it to hurt me or my
7:30
family not this time this time I'm gonna
7:33
overcome it get up with that mindset and
7:36
we find things to be thankful for
7:39
thankful for Life thankful for good
7:41
health thankful for our babies thank you
7:43
for our spouses thankful for a
7:46
comfortable home because there are
7:48
people there are families there are
7:52
cultures in this world that don't even
7:55
have comfortable homes don't even have
7:57
clean water they may have sunlight but
8:00
there are other things that they lack so
8:01
just think of the things that we are
8:03
thankful for that's a start maybe that's
8:05
something that we can be uplifted by and
8:08
to just be more grateful if you have
8:10
like a patio a deck or porch or anything
8:13
like that if you can set it up to where
8:16
you can access it even during the cold
8:18
months put like a little bonfire where
8:21
you can go out and enjoy some more is in
8:24
fires with your family put up like one
8:27
of those projector screens where maybe
8:29
you and your family could have like
8:30
movie Nights outside with like blankets
8:33
and things like that close it off so
8:34
that it is enjoyable even during the
8:38
colder months and when it's like really
8:40
really really cold maybe every week
8:43
schedule in outing something to do with
8:45
your little one or with your spouse or
8:47
with your family go out to eat find a
8:49
museum find things that you can do so
8:51
that you're not always in the house one
8:55
thing about me is because I am always
8:58
home I have turned into a homebody I
9:01
really want to go places so if I'm not
9:05
going somewhere like for family or for
9:06
my little one I'm normally in the house
9:08
like I'm such a homebody so by going
9:12
more places it just makes me want to be
9:14
at home even more it makes me appreciate
9:16
being in the house even more because I'm
9:19
exhausted from just People Inc so that's
9:22
another thing that I do that is
9:24
something that helps me I have also
9:27
learned that using it as a season of
9:30
comfort and a season of reflection
9:32
intentionally helps so I set a goal for
9:37
myself and I work Twisted every day when
9:39
I'm so focused on my goal and so focused
9:41
intentionally on something else it helps
9:43
me Focus Less on boredom I'm just
9:47
sitting there in one spot staring out
9:49
the window and seeing how gloomy it is
9:51
out there
9:53
what are you doing
9:58
we can often like be so busy that we
10:01
forget to just pause and spend time with
10:02
families so one thing we do is have
10:04
movie nights and after dinner we cuddle
10:07
up on the sofa in front of the fireplace
10:09
and have a glass of wine with my husband
10:11
and we just relax we spend time together
10:13
we enjoy a hot cocoa and things like
10:15
that using it intentionally as a season
10:18
of rest if I tell myself that the
10:20
purpose of that season because there is
10:22
a season and a time for everything if I
10:24
tell myself that the purpose of that
10:26
season is to actually rest like force me
10:31
to rest because it's too cold I'm not
10:32
going anywhere if I tell myself it's
10:35
forcing me to rest then I'm gonna know
10:37
that that season has a purpose and a lot
10:39
of times what we look for in life all of
10:42
us as humans as individuals even those
10:44
who are not affected by seasonal
10:47
depression or seasonal affective
10:48
disorder is we all yearn for a purpose
10:51
we all look for that it just makes us
10:53
feel better
10:54
when we have a purpose so again looking
10:57
at our little ones in our family that's
11:00
a purpose intentionally setting a
11:03
purpose for every season it's still so
11:06
very hard for me like my goal is to move
11:12
into a state that's like sunny all year
11:15
long that's my goal I want to move to
11:17
Florida so ultimately since my goal is
11:20
to move to Florida I know that it's
11:22
going to take some time and some work
11:23
for me to get there I want to spend five
11:25
years updating our home so that once
11:28
we're ready to sell it we can sell it
11:29
for more than what we purchased it for I
11:32
also think that if we're gonna have
11:34
another baby I'll be 29 this year I told
11:37
myself I wanted to have my second kid
11:39
before I was 30. I don't know if we're
11:41
planning to have another kid I would
11:43
want to be here closer to my mother
11:45
before I had another kid like once I
11:48
moved to Florida I'll still be able to
11:50
come back and visit people very much
11:52
often but
11:54
to have like that person that is going
11:57
to be there like when I have my baby to
11:59
watch and keep my first child I want my
12:02
mom to be there I also love my OB so
12:06
very much in my Midwife so I want to
12:08
have my second baby here so that is what
12:10
I'm focusing on for the time being is
12:13
setting ourselves up getting our
12:15
finances together getting our home
12:17
together and getting our you know selves
12:20
together so that we'll be in the
12:22
position to purchase a new home still
12:24
our current home and move to Florida
12:25
within the next four years so because I
12:28
set that goal for myself during those
12:31
months where I feel like seasonal
12:32
depression May seep in it's gonna make
12:34
me want that gold even more it's gonna
12:36
make me want to move to the sunny State
12:38
and things like that so in order for me
12:40
to get there I have to work hard at
12:42
making sure that I get everything you
12:45
know prepared and set so that we're
12:47
ready to do so when it's time so it's
12:49
gonna push me it's gonna drive me so
12:51
that is what I'm gonna focus on during
12:52
this you know season but again if that's
12:57
not you know you if you're not looking
12:59
to move to a sunny State there are still
13:01
so many ways that you can not allow
13:04
seasonal depression to affect you in a
13:06
way that's going to be harmful to your
13:08
health or affect your family and those
13:11
around you so find things to replace
13:14
what you lost during the summer months
13:18
things that uplift you things that bring
13:20
you Joy things that make you happy
13:22
sometimes for me it it's just prayer
13:25
daily prayer
13:27
it gets me through anything in life so
13:29
when I wake up and I say a prayer and I
13:31
read my devotions it just gives me this
13:33
sense of peace that no matter where I am
13:36
in life no matter what season I'm in in
13:38
life I can accomplish anything and be at
13:41
peace in doing that so if you are a
13:44
Christian or religious and you know you
13:47
believe in God that is something that I
13:52
highly encourage you to do is wake up
13:54
and pray and ask God for exactly what
13:56
you need on that day even before you get
13:58
out of bed if it's difficult for you to
14:00
get out of bed so if you struggle with
14:03
seasonal depression I get you I
14:05
understand and know that you are not
14:07
alone especially if you are a
14:09
stay-at-home mom I completely understand
14:10
I completely get you you're not along
14:13
seasonal depression is very real don't
14:16
allow anyone to tell you that seasonal
14:17
depression is not real because when we
14:19
do that we do not put ourselves in a
14:22
position to be able to overcome it
14:24
because we're not focusing on it we
14:27
don't label it as reality as a real
14:29
thing so know that is definitely a real
14:33
thing but it doesn't have to be
14:35
something that is bad know that seasonal
14:39
depression is not bigger than you it's
14:41
not bigger than your goals it's not
14:42
bigger than your children it's not
14:44
bigger than your family and remember
14:46
every single day is a new day so if
14:50
maybe it affected you pretty bad
14:53
yesterday that doesn't have to be the
14:54
case for today and it doesn't have to be
14:56
the case for tomorrow but you have to
14:57
intentionally try you can't give up you
15:00
have to keep working at it Mama and it's
15:02
going to be okay so I'm hoping that with
15:04
this video it you know gave you someone
15:08
that you can relate to someone who
15:11
understands you so that you know that
15:13
you are not alone my name is heaven I am
15:16
a stay-at-home mom wife and Homemaker I
15:18
create helpful relatable motivational
15:20
content for you all so if that is
15:23
something that you're into definitely
15:25
subscribe to my channel I would love to
15:27
have you here and if you found this
15:28
video to be helpful relatable
15:30
motivational definitely give it a thumbs
15:33
up for the sake of Channel growth so
15:35
that I can get this video out to more
15:36
people and bring awareness to other
15:38
people all around the world so again
15:41
thank you so much for watching this
15:43
video if you stay through to the end I
15:45
appreciate you so much and I hope that
15:47
you will have a great week that'll be
15:49
all for today until next time
