0:10
hello and welcome to the vlog my name is
0:13
heaven and i'm going to help you with
0:14
one of the most challenging tasks as a
0:16
parent potty training your toddler i'm
0:19
going to share with you how we
0:20
successfully nighttime potty trained our
0:22
two-year-old son noah and just a few
0:24
short nights and give some tips on how
0:26
you can do the same so that everyone can
0:28
get some much needed sleep before you
0:30
can begin a nighttime potty training you
0:32
must have either completed or made some
0:34
progress in daytime potty training
0:38
if you've mastered daytime potty
0:39
training that's great but if not and
0:41
you're in the process and you want to
0:43
tackle both daytime and nighttime potty
0:45
training at the same time it's
0:46
completely possible i know because we
0:49
did it if you haven't began daytime
0:51
potty training or haven't made any
0:53
progress i encourage you to check out my
0:54
last two videos in this series as well i
0:57
will always tell you that patience
0:58
communication and timing are key in the
1:01
potty training process and that's for
1:03
toddlers of both genders all ages and
1:06
all abilities your toddler has to be
1:08
able to communicate with you in some
1:10
type of way either verbally by signing
1:13
or by using manipulatives
1:15
you must be patient and your toddler
1:17
must be ready so now that that's been
1:20
said let's move on once your toddler has
1:22
begun to grasp going to the potty in the
1:24
daytime and understands the concept you
1:27
can begin nighttime potty training one
1:29
very good way to tell the true toddler
1:31
is ready for nighttime potty training is
1:33
that they can hold their bladder for a
1:35
few hours at a time and they can also
1:37
sometimes wake up dry which means they
1:38
do not wet the bed throughout the night
1:41
of course sometimes this is natural and
1:43
it may occur especially if you haven't
1:45
actually began nighttime potty training
1:47
or you're just now beginning daytime
1:50
potty training so if your toddler does
1:52
deal with the bed and they don't always
1:53
wake up dry that's completely okay but
1:56
again if they have began to grasp the
1:58
concept of daytime potty training and
2:00
they can hold their bladder for a few
2:02
hours at a time then you can still begin
2:04
nighttime potty training always set the
2:07
tone let your toddler know in advance
2:09
how things are going to go and set
2:11
realistic and firm expectations from the
2:14
start you can say something like you're
2:16
doing such a great job with your potty
2:18
training sessions i am so proud of you
2:20
and i knew you can do it you can do
2:22
anything you put your mind to now you're
2:25
ready for the next step because you've
2:27
been doing so great with your potty
2:29
training you're now ready to start
2:31
wearing your underpants at night but
2:33
remember you have to try and keep them
2:36
dry it's okay to wake mommy or daddy if
2:38
you have to go to the potty but try to
2:40
keep your underpants dry once the tone
2:43
is set
2:44
give your toddler an adequate amount of
2:46
hydration throughout the day and then
2:48
withhold all drinks and beverages within
2:51
two to three hours before bedtime if
2:54
your toddler normally goes potty about
2:56
every two hours then you want to make
2:58
sure that you're withholding beverages
2:59
about two and a half hours prior to
3:01
bedtime if your toddler normally goes to
3:04
the potty about three hours or more then
3:06
you want to make sure that you're
3:08
withholding beverages at least three and
3:09
a half hours prior to bedtime
3:12
the goal is that they will have time to
3:14
empty their bladders before they go to
3:16
sleep and without any more beverages
3:17
they should be good through the night if
3:19
your toddler can't hold their bladder
3:21
for two to three hours or more or even
3:24
really three to four hours then they may
3:26
not be ready for nighttime potty
3:28
training but that is not for certain so
3:31
you should definitely still try if you
3:33
nurse your toddler to sleep or
3:34
throughout the night they may also not
3:37
be ready to nighttime potty train but
3:39
again that is not for certain and you
3:40
should still give it a try maybe just
3:42
give your toddler a chance to go potty
3:45
during your midnight time sessions next
3:48
invest in some waterproof mattress
3:49
covers and sheets and have clean bedding
3:52
set aside and readily accessible just in
3:55
case do not use pull-ups because this
3:57
will give your toddler more comfort and
4:00
even confuse them
4:01
either the pull-up will absorb any
4:03
dampness so that your toddler won't even
4:05
be bothered with it and may still use it
4:08
or
4:09
they will know that because they have a
4:11
pull-up on they'll just assume that they
4:12
have the choice to use it so try to use
4:15
underwear or bare bottom at night
4:18
they will remember the feeling and if
4:20
they do have an accident the wet
4:22
blankets or underwear will provide a
4:24
sensation of uncomfortableness for them
4:26
to probably wake you up so that you can
4:29
acknowledge it clean them up and they
4:31
will surely remember the experience and
4:33
hopefully try to avoid it next time
4:35
if your toddler does have an accident
4:37
that is okay just clean it up don't make
4:40
a big deal out of it or get upset just
4:43
talk to your toddler reset the
4:44
expectations and continue to run the
4:47
course if they do wake up dry do make it
4:50
a big deal
4:52
praise them heavily give them a reward a
4:55
sticker a snack one of their favorite
4:58
toys whatever you have to do to let them
5:00
know that what they've done was a really
5:02
huge big deal and it was a really great
5:04
thing so that you can encourage them to
5:06
continue this success make sure that you
5:08
stay consistent continue to run the
5:10
course and the next few nights just
5:12
continue to monitor them continue to set
5:14
the expectations continue to remind them
5:17
and whenever they have success continue
5:19
to praise them
5:21
if after a few nights your child
5:23
continues to have accidents that's okay
5:25
too just reassess your routine to see
5:28
what could be the issue and then you'll
5:30
just need to revamp it a little for
5:32
instance you may need to withhold
5:33
liquids a little bit earlier in the
5:36
night compared to your daytime potty
5:38
training success or they may need a
5:40
little more time and it's okay if it
5:42
does take a little longer even if they
5:44
aren't ready another thing that you
5:46
could do is wake your toddler once per
5:48
night to give them an opportunity to use
5:51
the potty
5:52
now i do not recommend this method i
5:55
know a lot of people they do this but me
5:58
personally this is not something that we
5:59
did and this is not something that i
6:01
would recommend but if this is something
6:03
that might work well for you then go
6:05
ahead and give it a try because remember
6:07
every family is different every toddler
6:10
is different so potty training is going
6:11
to look different for every family so if
6:14
your toddler continues to have accidents
6:16
at night and you've stepped back and you
6:18
reassess your routine you revamp it a
6:20
little bit and you haven't had any
6:21
success if you would like to try waking
6:23
your toddler up once um every night to
6:26
give them an opportunity to use the
6:28
potty then go ahead and give it a try
6:30
you may have some success with though
6:33
though the reason why i do not recommend
6:34
it is because typically if you have to
6:36
wake your child in the middle of the
6:38
night they haven't had any beverages a
6:40
few hours before bedtime and they're
6:42
still having accidents through the night
6:44
it could be a sign that maybe they just
6:45
aren't able to hold their bladder or a
6:48
sign that they just aren't ready for
6:50
nighttime potty training
6:52
forcing a milestone that we're ready for
6:55
but our children aren't ready for can be
6:57
a really stressful time for us and for
7:01
our child and it can also create a
7:03
negative experience for both of you when
7:05
you're ready to try again so i always
7:07
say that timing is key and i always say
7:09
that you never should ever force a
7:12
milestone on your toddler if they're not
7:14
ready just because we're ready
7:16
furthermore waking our child in the
7:19
middle of the night can disrupt their
7:20
sleep pattern and sleep stages which are
7:22
so important and crucial for child
7:24
development during this time either
7:27
you're waking them in the middle of the
7:28
night to give them a chance to go potty
7:30
or they're waking you up in the middle
7:32
of the night or waking themselves up in
7:34
the middle of the night because they wet
7:36
their underwear and their bed is wet and
7:38
there's nothing to absorb it either way
7:41
all three are sleep disruptors that
7:43
doesn't help anyone get any sleep and
7:45
can also be negative on your child's
7:48
development if they aren't getting the
7:50
necessary stick that they need if you
7:52
have to wait a few more months that is
7:54
completely okay especially if they have
7:57
mastered daytime potty training they
7:59
will soon get this too eventually
8:02
one of the most important things during
8:04
this nighttime potty training which i
8:05
didn't mention yet is to make sure that
8:08
the potty and the bathroom are easily
8:10
accessible and well lit this way if your
8:14
child does wake themselves to go to the
8:16
potty and to go to the restroom they can
8:19
do so without being afraid of the dark
8:21
and it won't be too far for them to
8:22
access it always always always and i
8:25
will say this a thousand times
8:27
throughout this series be sure to offer
8:29
a ton of praise rewards and
8:33
encouragement and not just for the
8:35
toddler but also for ourselves we also
8:37
have to praise ourselves encourage
8:40
ourselves and reward ourselves because
8:42
we're in this together we're teaching
8:45
our child a new milestone and it's not
8:47
an easy thing every bit of success
8:49
deserves recognition and it deserves
8:52
praise for us and for our toddler and
8:55
these i cannot stress enough so now i'm
8:57
going to explain how we nighttime pretty
8:59
trained our two-year-old son noah he's
9:01
three now but we did this when he was
9:03
two years old so
9:05
we decided to tackle night time and
9:07
daytime potty training at the same time
9:10
i encourage you to check out our daytime
9:12
potty training schedule and our daytime
9:14
potty training tips and how we potty
9:17
train noah in just under a week in that
9:19
video you can get a bit of a background
9:22
of how daytime potty training went as
9:24
well as some tips for success and i also
9:28
talked about what we were doing through
9:30
the night so now i am just going to
9:32
reiterate more in depth what we did for
9:35
his nighttime potty training so
9:37
the very first disclaimer i would like
9:39
to give is that we did not fill him up
9:41
on liquids outside of what his normal
9:44
eating and drinking schedule was i know
9:46
some people do this and if you do and if
9:48
that's something that um worked for you
9:50
then that's wonderful the only reason
9:52
that we did not do this is because we
9:54
really needed to know and this is
9:56
something that will be helpful for
9:58
nighttime potty training what his
10:00
bladder capacity was we needed to know
10:02
how long he could go
10:04
holding his bladder and how often he
10:06
would need to use the patty and if we
10:09
were giving him more liquids or less
10:11
liquids than what we normally give him
10:13
throughout the day there would be no way
10:15
for us to really truly know what his
10:18
bladder capacity was so we just fed him
10:21
and gave him water
10:23
and just how we normally would we didn't
10:26
give him any more to encourage him to
10:28
use the bathroom so on day one when we
10:32
did the nighttime potty training we had
10:33
full success during our daytime potty
10:35
training sessions
10:36
we introduced him to the potty a few
10:39
months before we actually began potty
10:41
training so that he can get acquainted
10:42
with it and then once we actually begin
10:45
potty training we knew that he was ready
10:46
he already knew what the party was he
10:49
knew what it was for and so we had a lot
10:51
of success with our daytime potty
10:52
training because he didn't have any
10:54
accidents during the daytime we decided
10:56
to go ahead and give nighttime potty
10:58
training a try the first night we
11:00
decided to use a cloth diaper we did not
11:03
utilize cloth diapers
11:05
anytime um throughout his infancy we
11:09
tried it for about a couple of days and
11:12
it just didn't work well for us so for
11:14
him a cloth diaper it's not a diaper
11:17
it's just equivalent to underwear except
11:21
it's a lot more absorbent so
11:24
that just gave me a bit of peace of mind
11:26
knowing that if he did have an accident
11:28
in the middle of the night at least he
11:30
would still be comfortable he wouldn't
11:31
get any diaper rashes and he wouldn't
11:34
completely ruin the bedding to wear it
11:36
it would take a lot for us to get him
11:39
settled back down and to sleep because
11:41
again i talked about how i just don't
11:44
really like having to disrupt their
11:46
sleep patterns when it's so very
11:48
important in child development with that
11:50
being said we did wake him one time in
11:53
the middle of the night the first night
11:55
the wee night time potty trained him i
11:57
was so worried and i was a little bit
12:00
ancient and
12:02
i wanted to give him the opportunity to
12:04
use the bathroom at night this is
12:06
something that i've heard a lot of other
12:09
parents do this is something that
12:10
they've had success with so i figured
12:12
why not try it the only way that you
12:14
would know what works for you and your
12:15
family is if you try it so we did we
12:18
would tell beverages about two and a
12:20
half hours before he went to sleep right
12:23
before he went to sleep we gave him a
12:25
chance to use the restroom he went potty
12:28
he emptied his bladder and then we put
12:30
him on the cloth diaper and i set the
12:32
tone i let him know that he's gonna go
12:35
to sleep in his cloth diaper but he's
12:37
gonna have to keep it dry i let him
12:40
touch it and feel what a dry
12:43
diaper or underwear feels like so that
12:46
he will know this is how you know i want
12:48
it to feel
12:50
when you wake up if you can
12:52
so after i set the tone and explain to
12:55
him that i know you can do this you've
12:56
done so great with your daytime potty
12:58
training we're going to continue it at
13:00
night this is just the second part of it
13:03
and i know that you can do it we read
13:05
our nighttime book and then he went to
13:06
sleep i want to say
13:09
about five hours after he went to sleep
13:11
i woke him up in the middle of the night
13:13
and carried him to his potty which was
13:15
in the same room as us i made sure that
13:17
i kept the potty inside of the bedroom
13:19
so that i didn't have to expose him to
13:21
any unnecessary lighting or you know go
13:24
too far i just picked him up out of the
13:26
back to him on the potty and he was not
13:28
happy he cried he fussed he was not
13:31
happy he did go potty it was just this
13:34
much like it was such a small amount
13:36
that i really felt like
13:38
it was worthless like it wasn't needed
13:41
so then i went ahead and you know i told
13:44
him great job i put him back to sleep it
13:45
didn't take long for him to go back to
13:47
sleep he went right back to sleep
13:48
instantly because he was really tired he
13:51
really didn't want me waking him up in
13:52
the first place noah sleeps anywhere
13:54
from 10 to 12 hours at night sometimes
13:58
it's 10 hours sometimes it can go up to
14:01
12 hours and then whatever sleep he
14:03
lacks throughout the night he gets
14:05
during the day with a nap 14 hours is a
14:08
good amount of time for a child to sleep
14:11
per 24 hour period when noah woke up the
14:13
next morning he was completely dry he
14:15
stayed dry throughout the night without
14:17
any accident so of course i offered him
14:19
a lot of praise i also gave him a
14:21
sticker to put on his sticker chart and
14:23
i let him pick out one of his favorite
14:25
treats from our treat bucket what i did
14:27
was got a basket and put a lot of noah's
14:30
favorite snacks all of his favorite
14:32
types of candies or chips or cookies or
14:34
crackers and i put those inside of a
14:36
basket and i made sure i picked the ones
14:38
that he normally doesn't have often and
14:40
i put them in there so that every time
14:42
he had success in his potty training
14:44
journey he could pick a treat from his
14:46
treat bucket so we did that and then we
14:48
continued with our daytime potty
14:50
training
14:52
that night we set the tone again to let
14:55
him know how we expected him to behave
14:58
if he needed to use the restroom i let
15:00
him know that it's okay to wake me up if
15:02
you have to use the restroom
15:04
but i
15:06
was not going to wake him up this night
15:08
i had no intentions on waking him up in
15:10
the middle of the night if he woke up
15:12
because he needed to use the restroom
15:15
then of course
15:17
i would you know help him go to the
15:19
restroom because either he's going to
15:21
wake up because he needs to use the
15:22
restroom or he's going to use the
15:24
restroom on himself and he's probably
15:26
still going to wake up because it's
15:28
uncomfortable and we're going to need to
15:30
change him so todd were waking up on
15:33
their own in the middle of the night to
15:34
let you know that they have to go potty
15:35
that's completely okay and that's what
15:37
we want them to do if they have to use
15:38
the restroom but if we can it's best to
15:41
avoid waking them up in the middle of
15:44
the night we want them to be able to
15:45
learn on their own what it feels like
15:48
when they need to wake up and use the
15:50
bathroom so that they can get used to
15:52
getting up and letting us know if they
15:54
don't wake up and they just go
15:55
throughout the entire night without
15:57
wetting the bed then that's wonderful as
16:00
well so on day two we didn't put noah on
16:02
the cloth diaper instead we put him on
16:05
underwear that was the first time we put
16:07
him on underwear during the potty
16:09
training process we wanted to introduce
16:11
it to him the following day through our
16:13
daytime potty training but again i
16:15
decided to remove the cloth diaper so
16:17
that he can
16:19
feel that dampness in case he did have
16:21
an accident so that he can get the idea
16:24
of waking me up if he needs to go to the
16:26
restroom when lula woke up the next day
16:29
he was completely dry he did not want
16:30
the bed he went his completely full
16:33
um 10 hour sleep schedule without
16:36
wetting the bed again we withheld his
16:38
beverages about two and a half to three
16:41
hours before he went to sleep and gave
16:43
him the opportunity to empty his bladder
16:46
right before he went to sleep so
16:49
night number two was a success every
16:52
night after that we have had complete
16:55
success with noah's nighttime potty
16:57
training i wouldn't say that the biggest
16:59
thing is just making sure that they were
17:00
ready noah was ready he was able to
17:02
communicate with us and he had success
17:04
during his daytime potty training so
17:08
those are really important daytime potty
17:10
training success
17:12
setting the tone
17:13
timing being patient and being confident
17:16
we were confident in him which made him
17:19
confident in himself we continued to set
